New placement student from Bradford University joins Edwards' Analytical for 2008

By Lisa Wigby

My name is Lisa Wigby and I joined Edwards’ Analytical in July 2007 under the Industrial Placement scheme from the University of Bradford.

At the University of Bradford I am studying for a degree in Forensic Science, among that I enjoy what most other people do, a little bit of sport, the usual socialising and making it to classes on time!

I originally come from Harrogate, a quaint little town in North Yorkshire, well known for its pleasant scenery, expensive houses and great night-life!

While at Edwards Analytical I am learning many generic skills which can be applied to other industrial sections. However my subject of interest being Forensic science, I have become more interested in the operation of equipment which can lead to identification of samples such as FT-IR spectroscopy and microscopy and DSC (Differential Scanning Calorimetry).  However, I have become accustomed to the use of other techniques and pieces of equipment such as MFR (Melt Flow Rate’s), WVP (Water Vapour Permeation) and Density Tests, which also aid in the identification and/or properties of materials too.

Also as part of my normal laboratory duties I am undertaking a small research project on the analysis of hair fibres using the companies' new Perkin Elmer FT-IR microscope. Updates of this projects progress will be posted on the website soon!

I am very grateful for the opportunity that Edwards’ Analytical has given me; in terms of being able to complete my industrial studies with them, open up new opportunities in my later career, being able to conduct and observe research studies, learn new analytical methods and procedures and operate equipment to an accurate and precise level so that when I go back to University for my finally year I will ‘hit the ground running’ with my final modules.”
